Unconference Session 3

Think Tank: Changing the Paradigm - Including Students in Learning Design

We talk a good game when it comes to 21st century learning but too often fall into the trap of using shiny new tools to merely give the old teaching model a new sparkle.

To truly change the paradigm, we need to move beyond teacher created content and invite students to participate in designing their own learning experiences. Virtual worlds provide us with a unique space to do just that.

Before education takes these extraordinary new tools and turns them into a 3D workbooks, let's put our heads together and generate
a map for best practices.
Bring your expertise, experience, creativity and let's jam!

Unconference Session 4

Self-Driven and Classroom-Based: Professional Development in the 21st Century.

Based on Guy Claxton’s statement that “schools should become communities of practice where the ‘elders’ of the community are themselves exemplary learners” (Claxton, 2002), this session will explore the importance of Classroom-Based Teacher Development and Reflective Practice as essential professional development practices for the 21st century. The following statement will serve as a discussion prompt for this session:

Teacher professional development must be reconfigured to allow teachers to focus on examining and learning from their own professional contexts. Teachers must investigate their practices on a regular basis, learn to design new approaches, and quickly and effectively respond to the demands of the ever-changing knowledge society. Classrooms must therefore become sites of inquiry where teachers engage in practice that is perpetually experimental.

Agile 3d

A funny thing happened while I was teaching Agile Project Management and Software development. 1) The airplanes planes went away, so I landed in virtual worlds to teach without travel. 2) I found you can teach *better* using immersive cybergodgy then simply flipping slide after slide.

Join me as I share what I'ved learned from a year of immersive teaching and attending the one year certificate in virtual worlds program from the university of Washington. There is something for you here if you want to learn about Agile, or if you want to learn about the art of teaching in 3d!

Unconference Session 14

Making the Impossible Possible: Implementing a virtual worlds program in a traditional school environment
Summary:
In this session we will explore one school’s journey to implement their Virtual Worlds Program. Even in a traditional school environment it is possible to bring about change to engage and motivate students in their learning.
By using Quest Atlantis and OpenSim, teachers have discovered that enthusiasm and persistence are two of the key ingredients for educators looking to use virtual worlds with their students. Even those with little experience in this field can make it happen with the right support.
Target Audience:
Educators looking to implement a virtual worlds program at their school.
Educators with experience in this field are also very welcome. (We are still learning!)
Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites for this session.

Further information about the school's Virtual Worlds Program can be found at:

Unconference Session 16

Education Under Attack: What Can Be Done to Protect Education, Teachers, and Students Around the World?

Recently, UNESCO published a comprehensive report on "targeted political and military violence against education staff, students, teachers, union and government officials, aid workers and institutions" around the world. According to the report, since 2007 there have been thousands of cases where students, educators, and other education staff were kidnapped, imprisoned, beaten, tortured, killed, or sexually violated by rebels, armies, and repressive regimes around the world. Over the past three years, attacks on education took place in at least 31 countries.

In this interactive exhibit, built by Teachers Without Borders, participants will learn about attacks on education that took place around the world over the past three years. The exhibit will address the scale of the problem, the nature of attacks on education around the world, targets and motives, as well as the long-term impact of these attacks on education and development around the world.

This exhibit and hour-long session will also encourage the participants to discuss this problem and consider what can be done - at the classroom and school level in countries free from this kind of violence - to raise awareness of this problem and work towards greater protection and prevention measures.
